Indian resume format guide: IT, finance, and fresher resumes

· 6 min read · By The ResumeEase Team

India's job market runs heavily through ATS-driven hiring at scale, especially in IT services and finance, so format discipline matters even more than in smaller hiring markets. A handful of conventions differ from US or UK norms.

Format basics

  • One page for freshers and early-career candidates, up to two pages beyond roughly 6-8 years of experience.
  • Reverse-chronological order, with a technical skills section placed high for IT roles, recruiters and parsers search on it first.
  • Include your notice period and current location near the top for roles hiring at volume; recruiters filter on both.

For freshers and campus hires

With little or no work history, lead with education (degree, institution, CGPA if strong), then relevant projects, internships, and certifications, in that order. Quantify projects the same way you would quantify a job: scope, tools used, outcome. A well-described academic project can carry as much weight as a short internship if it is specific.

IT and finance specifics

For IT roles, list specific technologies and frameworks by name (not "proficient in modern web development"), since both recruiters and ATS keyword search match on exact terms from the job description. For finance roles, certifications (CA, CFA, CPA progress) belong near the top, not buried at the bottom under education.

ResumeEase's India resume builder is tuned for these conventions, including ATS-safe formatting for high-volume applicant tracking systems common in Indian hiring.

Frequently asked questions

Should freshers include a CGPA on their resume?

Yes if it is strong (generally above 7.5/10 or equivalent) and you have limited work experience to lead with instead. Once you have 2-3 years of relevant work experience, CGPA becomes optional.

Does resume length matter for Indian ATS systems?

Less than format consistency does. A one-page fresher resume and a two-page senior resume both parse fine if the structure is clean, single-column, and uses standard section headings.
