US resume format guide: what American recruiters expect

US hiring has its own resume conventions, distinct enough that a CV formatted for the UK, EU, or Asia-Pacific market will read as slightly foreign to an American recruiter, even when the underlying experience is exactly what they want.

Length and structure

• One page for under ~8 years of experience, two pages beyond that. US recruiters skim fast; extra length has to be earned by extra relevance, not just extra history.
• Reverse-chronological is the default and the safest choice unless you are changing careers entirely.
• Standard section order: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills. Unusual ordering or headings slow down both parsers and humans.

What to leave off

Unlike many other markets, US resumes omit a photo, date of birth, marital status, and nationality, including these is unusual and can read as a mismatch with local norms, not a bonus. "References available on request" is also outdated: leave it off and provide references only when asked.

Tone: direct and quantified

US resumes reward more direct self-promotion than British or East Asian norms typically consider appropriate, understated language reads as under-qualified. Lead with results and numbers: percentage growth, dollar amounts, team size, time saved. "Managed a team" is weak; "Managed a 6-person team, cut onboarding time 30%" is a US-style bullet.

For international candidates applying to US roles

State your US work authorization status plainly near the top (for example, "Authorized to work in the US" or your visa status) rather than leaving a recruiter to guess and pass. If your degree or job titles do not translate directly, add a brief US-equivalent clarification in parentheses rather than assuming the reader will infer it.
