UK CV format guide: what British recruiters expect

A UK CV is closer to a US resume than to a European-style CV, but the two are not identical. Length, tone, and a few conventions around personal details all differ enough that a resume built for American recruiters reads slightly off to a British one.

- Two pages is the norm at almost any career stage, longer than the US one-page default for early-career candidates.
- Tone is more measured than US resumes: heavy self-promotion ("world-class," "guru") reads as overselling in UK hiring culture. State the achievement; let the number carry the weight.
- A short personal profile (2-3 sentences) at the top is standard, similar to a US summary but usually slightly more understated.
What to include (and leave off)
UK CVs commonly include education in more detail than US resumes, including A-levels or equivalent for early-career candidates.
